Language and Skills Program
Language and Skills Program is language training for newcomers to Canada. The Language and Skills Program offers Literacy (basic) through to Level 7 (advance) classes. Childminding is available for children 6 months to 5 years of age for the day classes Mon. to Thurs. and 19 mths to 5 yrs. for the evening classes Mon. to Thurs.
What can the Language and Skills Program teach you?
The Language and Skills Program training helps students learn basic to advanced language skills that will be useful in their everyday lives. For instance, they can learn: the alphabet and numeric systems; how to ask for directions; how to talk to their child´s teacher or their own teacher; how to explain their health concerns to the doctor, make an appointment; learn grammar instruction, how to prepare for Post Secondary Education and the Canadian work culture, TOEFL preparation, employment readiness and the ability to communicate in other situations.
How long does the Language and Skills Program last?
The sessions are twelve weeks long and we offer four twelve week sessions per year. Clients progress at their own pace.
Where are the Language and Skills Program classes held?
Language and Skills Program classes are held at the MCC East End Office (the only east end Language and Skills Program) located at:

Currently we offer classes Monday through Thursday from either 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (full-time program) or 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (part-time program) We offer Pronunciation and Conversation classes every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. childminding is offered for children 19 mths. to 5 yrs.

Language and Skills Program is valuable because it helps newcomers to settle and integrate into their new community. It helps to enhance the newcomer´s communication skills; an invaluable asset learned both in the classroom and in the language lab. It provides frequent guest speakers and field trips as well as regular instruction so that newcomers can be effectively familiarized with their new Canadian society.
Eligibility To qualify for this program, one must be 18 years and older and must be a Permanent Resident, Convention Refugee, on a special Minister´s Permit or possess an eligibility letter for Permanent Residence from CIC. All clients must have taken the CLBA Assessment in order to attend the LINC program at the Language Assessment and Resource Centre (LARC) located at 1410 Ouellette Avenue, Windsor. Call first for an appointment at 519-253-2724. Clients from Bhutan and Myanmar (former Burma) that have been in country less than one year require a T.B. test which can be done for free at the Health Unit located at 1005 Ouellette Avenue Clients do not need OHIP card.
