Mentoring Works!

Mentoring Works! is an innovative program that partners internationally trained immigrants (mentees) with established professionals or tradespersons (mentors) to assist them as they prepare to enter their work fields in Canada.

Program

Mentoring Works! assists Mentees in gaining the knowledge, experience, and networks needed to work in their field or a similar field. As a Mentee through the program you can:

  • Increase your knowledge of Canadian workplace culture and norms.
  • Improve your occupation-specific language and terminology.
  • Develop professional networks.
  • Learn the rules, norms, values, and practices of your profession, technical field, or trade in Canada.
  • Gain increased confidence and learn to market yourself more effectively.
  • Gather information on local industries and potential employers.

As a Mentor you can share knowledge and expertise gained through your own experience and learn about your field from an international perspective.

Mentors are part of an innovative program with professional and personal benefits, which include:

  • Contributing to Windsor-Essex by assisting an internationally trained immigrant actualize his/her full employment potential and contribute to Canadian society and the economy.
  • Exchanging ideas, information, and resources.
  • Promoting your company and enhancing its image.
  • Share insight into Canadian workplace culture and norms.
  • Provide information and advice.
  • Explain the rules, norms, values, and practices of your profession, technical field, or trade.
  • Introduce your mentee to employment related networks, whenever possible.

Eligibility

Mentees

  • Eligibile to work in Canada and have lived here less than 5 years.
  • Trained and have work experience in their profession, technical field or trade outside of Canada.
  • Unemployed or underemployed.
  • Job ready (have a workplace ready level of English and a prepared resumé) and are actively looking for employment.
  • Highly driven and committed to looking for work in their field or a similar field.

Mentors

  • Established professional or tradesperson who is ready to share their knowledge and expertise.
  • Ability to dedicate an hour a week for a four month period.
