Volunteer Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes, we declare that all volunteers have these rights:

  • To be fully informed about one’s responsibilities and time commitment, and the organization before accepting the position.
  • To be provided with an opportunity for orientation and training to assist in functioning effectively.
  • To expect that volunteer time will not be wasted by lack of planning, coordination, and cooperation within the organization or within a committee.
  • To be placed in an assignment that is worthwhile and challenging with the freedom to use existing skills or develop new ones.
  • To be able to decline any assignment if it is felt that the assignment does not match one’s skill or interest.
  • To have a successful experience that provides opportunity for personal growth.
  • To be trusted with confidential information that will help accomplish any assignment or responsibility.
  • To have access to an evaluation process that will measure the performance based on measurable and impartial standards.
  • To be recognized, at appropriate times, for one’s work and involvement.
