Job Type: Full Time (40 hours/week)
Salary : $25.58 per/hour

POSITION SUMMARY:
In support of the mission and vision of the Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County (MCC) the Life Skills Worker will be responsible to supplement the services provided to Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) upon their arrival to Canada. The Life Skills Worker will be responsible for developing, implementing and providing enhanced orientation services and activities within the Windsor and Essex County area to assist GARs with the settlement and integration process so they have the basic life skills to successfully settle and integrate into Canadian society, as part of the Windsor Resettlement Assistance Program for Newcomers to Canada as funded by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in Human Services, Social Services and/or any related area and a minimum 2 years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge and experience with issues related to diverse populations, including immigrants and refugees
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the area agencies serving immigrants, their programs and services, current immigration issues and resources available in the community
  • Experience teaching life skills including but not limited to: delivery of information and demonstration on banking, hygiene, shopping and other relevant life skills initiatives
  • Demonstrated group facilitation and presentation skills, including workshop planning and delivery
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills are essential
  • Administrative, planning, facilitation, written and oral communication skills are essential
  • Strong digital and computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Office is a must
  • Must have the ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid Driver’s License is required
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends
  • Fluency in a second language is an asset
  • Must possess a valid vulnerable sector police clearance, renewed every 3 years

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • To provide intensive and short term life skills help/enhanced orientation to high needs GARs for the first weeks after arrival
  • Reviews client assessment to assess client’s life skills
  • In collaboration with Case Managers, develop a plan of action for clients who require Life Skills services
  • Conducts life skills sessions for clients (including; in-home visits, practical demonstrations, community agencies visits, health facilities, etc.) in a one to one basis or in group sessions as required
  • Monitors client’s life skills development and provide client reassessment if required
  • Will be required to accompany clients (via walking and public transportation) for life skills sessions and appointments
  • Develops and implement evaluation and monitoring tools to assess the effectiveness of Life Skills services
  • Maintains clients’ files and program statistics; maintain and record services delivered to clients; document all calls and client visits; prepare and submit statistical and progress reports to the supervisor as required
  • Prepares and submits monthly report and/or other reports as required
  • Participates in inter program client care conferences to review client’s settlement and integration process
  • Communicates with MCC staff on a regular basis and develops an effective working relationship; assists other staff to obtain desired client and program outcomes
  • Enhances a relationship of trust with the client/family to maximize the client’s ability to develop life skills, make own informed decisions and to achieve settlement and integration goals
  • Keeps the immediate supervisor up to date with all issues and concerns with the program and maintain the supervisor informed of all program activities
  • Participate in regular program, team and organization meetings as required
  • Attend community meetings as required
  • Attend professional development opportunities as required
  • Other duties as assigned
