POSITION: Family Support Worker – Ignite Academy Program
REPORTS TO: Manager of Ignite Academy
HOURS: 35 hours/week until March 31, 2027
COMPENSATION: $ 28.75/per hour
POSITION SUMMARY
In support of the mission and vision of the Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County (MCC), the Family Support Worker in the Ignite Academy Program provides direct, client-centred support to newcomer and vulnerable families. This role focuses on strengthening family stability, improving access to community resources, and supporting participant success in education, employment, and settlement pathways.
The Family Support Worker works closely with program staff, educators, community partners, and families to identify needs, reduce barriers, and promote positive outcomes for children and caregivers. The position plays a critical role in ensuring families feel supported, empowered, and connected within the community.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, Child & Youth Care, Community Development, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with families, newcomers, or vulnerable populations.
- Knowledge of settlement, education, employment, and community support systems.
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and family-centered practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
- High level of discretion and ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
- Strong organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Valid Level 2 Police Clearance, renewed every three years.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Family & Participant Support
- Conduct needs assessments and develop individualized family support plans.
- Provide one-on-one support, advocacy, and referrals for families.
- Support families with housing, education, childcare, health, employment, and settlement services.
- Assist participants in navigating school systems, community services, and social supports.
- Provide crisis support and connect families to appropriate external services when required.
Program & Case Management
- Maintain accurate case notes, service plans, and progress reports.
- Track participant outcomes and contribute to program reporting.
- Support family participation in Ignite Academy activities and workshops.
- Monitor attendance, engagement, and barriers to participation.
Community Partnerships & Referrals
- Build and maintain relationships with community agencies and service providers.
- Make referrals and follow up to ensure families receive appropriate services.
- Attend case conferences and inter-agency meetings as required.
Advocacy & Education
- Advocate on behalf of families to reduce systemic and practical barriers.
- Educate families on available services, rights, and community resources.
- Promote family empowerment, independence, and long-term stability.
Compliance & Professional Practice
- Follow MCC policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
- Ensure all work aligns with funder requirements and legislative obligations.
- Support a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment in accordance with MCC values and Occupational Health & Safety legislation.
