Assistance Program (MCC RAP)

POSITION:                     Life Skills Worker

REPORTS TO:              RAP Manager

HOURS:                           40 hours/week
(Temporary 7-month contract)

SALARY:                          $26.61 per/hour

START DATE:              April 1, 2025

 

POSITION SUMMARY:          

The Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County (MCC) is dedicated to facilitating the settlement and integration of Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs) within our community. As a Life Skills Worker, you will play a vital role in delivering comprehensive orientation services and tailored support to GARs upon their arrival in Canada. This position involves developing and implementing life skills programming that equips newcomers with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate daily life, access essential services, and integrate successfully into Canadian society. This role is part of the Windsor Resettlement Assistance Program, funded by Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:

·       Post-secondary diploma in Human Services, Social Services, or a related field, with a minimum of two years of relevant experience.

Knowledge & Expertise:

·       In-depth understanding of issues affecting diverse populations, particularly immigrants and refugees.
·       Familiarity with local agencies, programs, and services supporting newcomer settlement.
·       Awareness of current immigration policies and community resources.
Life Skills Training Experience:

·       Ability to deliver hands-on instruction and demonstrations on essential life skills such as banking, hygiene, shopping, and navigating public services.
·       Experience facilitating group workshops and individual training sessions.

Skills & Abilities:

·       Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

·       Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate life skills training programs.

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other digital tools.

Other Requirements:

·       Ability to travel to off-site locations as needed; a valid driver’s license (if applicable).

·       Flexibility to work days, evenings, and weekends as required.

·       Fluency in a second language is considered an asset.

·       A valid Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance (renewed every three years).

 AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Provide intensive short-term life skills support and orientation to high-needs GARs during their initial weeks in Canada.

  • Assess client needs and collaborate with Case Managers to develop personalized life skills plans.
  • Conduct one-on-one and group training sessions, including home visits, community tours, and agency visits.
  • Accompany clients to essential appointments and life skills sessions, using public transit or walking when required.
  • Monitor and evaluate clients’ progress in developing life skills, adjusting support as needed.
  • Maintain accurate client records, program statistics, and progress reports.
  • Participate in client case conferences, interdepartmental collaboration, and community meetings.
  • Build trust with clients and their families, fostering independence and informed decision-making.
  • Keep the Program Manager informed of program activities, challenges, and successes.
  • Engage in team meetings, professional development opportunities, and other duties as assigned.
